Back in Action… Well, Sort Of…

Its been a while since I’ve had the time (or money) to get this site back up. For those of you who remember the old site – its not lost – I have recently switched hosting providers and am now using WordPress as my blogging platform. You’ll find all of my older articles here but some of them have broken images – an issue which I am working to resolve.

I do not by any means have any negative feelings about SquareSpace and I still recommend them to anyone who is interested in a simple all in one solution for their website. I (as a developer) have decided that I would like to try new things and have migrated to a hosting provider which supports multiple platforms for me to play with.

I am also working on a site in Ruby on Rails which is not supported (at least to my knowledge) by SquareSpace as they do their own content management.

iDracula

Cost: $0.99

Rating: 10/10 A Must Buy!!

Verdict: Gotta dollar? Buy It!!

iDracula is a top-down third person shooter of which upon viewing screenshots of the game in the iTunes store, I had to buy, it just looked fantastic.

In iDracula, you play what I see as a Van Helsing esque character, slaying hordes of wearwolves, ghosts, slimy things that look like the chickens from Half-Life, and duh… vampires. The wearwolves, chicken things and such are easy kills, just firing away with your 9999 pistol rounds will kill the swarms easily untill you get some more firepower or buff’s for your character, but the rest of em… are not so easy to kill in one or two shots……

Firepower: (aka: Gameplay)

There are half a dozen guns in this game that you can use to plow through the hordes of ememies, crossbows, machine guns and a grenade launcher to name a few, and you’ll need them, as the enemies are relentless!!

Aesthetics:

Visuals

The art in the game is very well done, it reminds me of the first Diablo at first glance, and then it gets better. The movement of monsters and character are well done; the animations associated with the grenade launcher being the most entertaining.

Audio

The sound in iDracula is also pleasing. The blaring of the guns sound realistic… as realistic as one would want in a hand-held game. The music in the game is a tad on the metal side, and being a metal fan, gets thumbs up. After all, this is a game about killing things, and come-on…. its a metal thing to do.

Controls:

The controls, like many iPod touch games, are a little tricky due to finger/thumb slippage, but are solid otherwise. Two circles in either bottom corner are your movement and shooting direction and allow the screen to be kept free of your fingers for more of that artwork.

Overall:

iDracula is a game that I would recomend to anyone looking for quick and easy fun. There is a load screen, but as a developer, I say its a must for all the stuff that this game has. This game begs me to ask the question as to why more games dont look this good…?

If you pick it up (and think I’m full of it) post your thoughts.

How did you feel about the game calling you a noob….?

Update

A new update to the application makes this great game even better!! With new additions comes a new price tag; $2.99… The new price is a bit of a deterrant but i still think its worth it. New game modes, guns and levels turn a fun game better.

New Developments

Being a third year student (of a four year program) at a reputable university led me to believe that I would be ready for work in ‘the real world’. So when I bumped into my cousin and told him about how I was looking for an internship, and he told me that he could get me a job, I was confident.

Turns out, I know nothing…. Yes, I knew the basics (thought I knew more), but the Java, HTML, CSS and Javascript programing I was taught in my university classes simply wasn’t enough.

ASP.NET? C#? JSON? JQuery? SQL? ….. Microsoft products?

What are these things?

I had no idea that real people actually used Microsoft products in a professional setting. As it turns out they do…. and its actually not that bad.

Its been about two months now, and I have a firm understanding of what it is I do, and I’ve impressed my co-workers a little bit too with some of the things I picked up in class, which leads me here, to this blog.

Here is where I intend to write about both my experiences as a software developer in an ASP.NET, C# (bla bla bla) environment, and some tips and tricks on how I (sometimes ‘we’) implemented cool new things.
